Marquette Mountain spring event set for this weekend

Spring has finally sprung, and with it comes the Marquette Mountain Spring Skiesta, which will be held Saturday and Sunday.

“After this pretty hectic season of changes and community interaction we really want this event to be one last big celebration for everybody in the ski community and over at Northern Michigan University and even for our employees here who have worked through the season,” said Marquette Mountain Events Coordinator Alexa Alagon.

On Saturday, there will be a grill-out from 12-2 p.m., with the Northern Michigan University Board and Ski Club holding its annual Surf Park event from 12-4 p.m.

The event includes a rail jam and big air competition.

From 1-2 p.m., there will be a fire hose race in which teams of five will race down the Snowfield course while carrying a fire hose.

There will also be races held on Cliffs Ridge from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a wide variety of age groups.

Sunday is Kids’ Day at the Spring Skiesta, with another grill out from 12-2 p.m. and a Silly Slalom event from 1-2:30 p.m., which includes a kids’ obstacle course on the bunny hill.

“The big finale will be the Slush Cup on Sunday afternoon, which a lot of people have always loved. It’s always been a good time,” Alagon said. “We’re hoping for a good turnout.”

From 3-4 p.m., the Slush Cup will be held. Pre-registration is required, as well as a helmet — and costumes are encouraged.

Also Sunday will be a kid-friendly scavenger hunt across the mountain.

Daily tickets to participate are $10 per day and include all events and lunch (except the races on Saturday). Spectators may attend for free.

“Just come out and enjoy this nice weekend that we’re supposed to have here,” Alagon said. “It’s free to spectate all of the events so if you have a season pass and you want to just do your own thing, just supporting the hills is the biggest thing we’re trying to promote for the weekend.

This event is a great way to get the family out and officially kick off the spring season.
