Trail groomers sought for upcoming snowmobile season

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking for a few good non-profit organizations or clubs to help with snowmobile trail grooming in Marquette County.

Well, actually, just one entity will do for now, to take over 23 miles along Trail No. 8 between the “Crossroads” area in Sands Township and Little Lake; 7 miles southwest of Gwinn on Trail No. 32; and 32 miles of Trail No. 33 between Gwinn and Arnold.

Without a grooming sponsor for those areas, a connection between the Little Lake-Gwinn and Marquette-Negaunee areas would be lost, a DNR official said for a Mining Journal story on the matter.

As a practical matter, Trail No. 8 is the primary east-west route across the northern U.P., officials tell us.

Additionally, without a trail sponsor, there would be no trail connecting Arnold to Gwinn and Gwinn to Republic over Trails 32 and 33, which would cut off Gwinn completely from the snowmobile trail system

That would have significant implications for the business community there and elsewhere.

Interested in getting involved? It’s a major commitment but one, we believe, will pay many dividends in the long run.

The DNR can be contacted at 228-6561.
