Wildcat hockey fans asked to step up for big weekend tilt

Attention, Hockeyville: it is time to show your strength again by coming out this weekend to support the Northern Michigan University hockey Wildcats.

You proved your dedication when we needed it to win the Hockeyville designation. You showed it again earlier this year when the naming of the ice at the Berry Event Center as the Rick Comley Rink was made with over 3,200 fans at the game.

For years, fans showed their dissatisfaction for the coaching staff by not attending NMU hockey games. Some numbers were rumored to have gone from around 2,600 season ticket holders down to around 400 last year.

For those of you who wanted a change in coaches, you got it. For those who wanted a more successful team, you got it. We are currently in second place in the WCHA. We have gone up against some of the top teams in the country this year and won. This is the most successful team we have had in many years and they deserve our support.

We have our U.P. rivals Lake Superior State University coming to town this weekend for games Friday and Saturday at 7:07 p.m. and they will bring a fan base with them. It is important that we have a strong local showing of hockey fans to cheer on the Wildcats. The new coach Grant Potulny is doing his job by bringing a successful hockey team back to Marquette. Now it is time for us to do our jobs by showing up for the game and cheering them on to a weekend sweep of LSSU.

For those people, lucky enough to be at the games last weekend, they saw a fantastic weekend of hockey with NMU sweeping Bowling Green. On Saturday night, the winning goal was scored in overtime with 6 seconds left on the clock. That excitement was definitely worth the price of admission. You can’t experience the thrill of an overtime win with only seconds left if you are not there.

Your support of the team can’t be underestimated. The stronger the fan base the stronger the team will be on the ice. Let’s go Marquette. It is time to get excited about NMU Hockey again. We believe that we have a future champion on the way and your support is going to help secure that success in the future.

It’s time that Hockeyville shows its true colors again by helping to cheer on the Wildcats this weekend.
