Community asked for assistance in locating another missing person

The police are asking for the public’s help once again to help find a missing person in the central Upper Peninsula.

Last week, a Cooks woman and Rumely man were missing for much of the week before the couple — LeeAnn Marie Wilmoth, 28 and Eric Scott Ruska, 37 — was located Friday in Munising. Federal authorities charged Ruska on Monday with kidnapping and more charges are possible. On that occasion, police asked for help in finding the couple.

In this latest case, law enforcement isn’t talking about criminal activity. But they are worried about Kara Moore, who was last seen last Friday hiking on the Little Beaver Lake Trail in the area of Beaver Creek Campground at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Alger County.

According to reports included in a Mining Journal story on Monday’s front page, Moore is reportedly white, 5 feet 4 inches tall, and has long gray hair. She is wearing metal rim glasses, black pants, tennis shoes, a purple sweatshirt, a turquoise jacket and has a multicolored backpack. A National Park System spokeswoman said the agency has been searching for her since Friday.

NPS said, in a written statement, that Moore, 55, and her family — apparently about 10 people in all — were at the beach Friday and started packing up around 5 p.m. They hiked back to the parking lot and realized she wasn’t with them. They reported Moore missing at about 7:50 p.m., and at least four teams of searchers have been looking since 8:30 Friday evening.

The following day, a greater number of search elements were added including helicopters, canine units and marine units. Still no sign.

Adding an additional element of urgency is the fact that Moore sustained a brain injury as a teenager and suffers short-term memory loss as a result. She is described, however, as friendly and outgoing.

Authorities asking anyone with information on her whereabouts to call 911 immediately. We’d like to reinforce that. Let’s do everything we can to get Kara back with her friends and family as soon as possible.
