KBIC trail should spark economic development

A trail that’s being planned by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community that would run along the southern rim of Keweenaw Bay from Zeba to Sand Point should boost tourism and the general economics of the area.

The 12-mile stretch would cost about $14 million and would be built with significant support of the KBIC, since a majority of it would be on tribal land, The Associated Press reported.

A $160,000 study, underwritten by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. through a $160,000 grant, was commissioned by the tribe to determine feasibility.

It recommended several potential avenues for funding, including not only tribal but county, state, federal sources.

Other issues to consider include cooperation among multiple jurisdictions, acquiring land and avoiding burial sites near Sand Point, said AP.

If for no other reason than cooperation among a wide variety of entities, we think this project holds a great deal of promise.

And let’s not forget that Baraga County, which has had a continuously high unemployment rate, could use the additional development.

It’ll be interesting to watch the project develop over time.
