First weekend of autumn loaded with fun activities

The calendar says autumn but the weekend’s forecast says summer, with expected temperatures in the ’70s in Superiorland. That means it’s a great chance to get out to walk, run or ride a bike in the beauty that surrounds us.

If you’re going to walk, why not Walk to End Alzheimer’s? This annual event will take place Saturday, starting at the Marquette YMCA, 1420 Pine St. More than 200 people are expected at this year’s event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Registration is at 9 a.m., a ceremony is planned at 10 a.m. and walk commences at 10:30 a.m.

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is to help the 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s including some 180,000 in Michigan. For more information, visit alz.org/walk

Feel like a run? The Northern Michigan University Wildcat Battalion of ROTC, assisted by the Veterans Resource Office, will be holding a 5k/10k run, along with an optional rucksack event, on Saturday, with day-of registration beginning at 7 a.m. and the races starting at 8 a.m. All races will begin at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

Can’t decide if you want to walk or bike? A celebratory run/bike event with ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the western terminus of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in downtown Republic. It will give everyone a chance to see the area since the Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority upgraded 2.5 miles of trail, reaching from downtown Republic at the Chicken Coop – a gift shop in downtown – along School Lake, then north on the LS&I rail grade to the Republic/Humboldt Township Line.

IOHT officials said the trail was built and upgraded with a fine crushed aggregate ranging from eight feet to ten feet wide to accommodate walkers, bikers, ORVers, snowmobilers, and equestrians.

For more information on this special event, contact the Iron Ore Heritage Trail Authority by calling 235-2923 or call Liz Hangas at the Chicken Coop at 376-8005.

If you’re more in the spectator mode, Saturday affords the chance to watch bikers ride a long, long ways in beautiful Marquette County. The 906 Adventure Team, The Border Grill and others have planned the inaugural Marji Gesick 100, which includes races of 100 miles and 50 miles.

The races benefit the Noquemanon Trail Network Single-Track and the Range Area Mountain Bike Association. The 100-mile event starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Wetmore Pond in Marquette and the 50-miler at 9 a.m. at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee Township. Both end in Ishpeming and both should be great for spectators to view along the way.

The finish line for the Marji Gesick races is on top of Ishpeming’s Jasper Knob, with a fundraising “aftermath” celebration to begin at 6 p.m. at Cognition Brewery Company, 113 E. Canda St., Ishpeming. The celebration will include live music, barbecued ribs and more. The first 100 registered racers received free tickets, with a very limited number of tickets at $25 each after that. Proceeds from the celebration will be used to buy a new snowmobile to groom winter trails for bicyclists.

We encourage everyone to get out to enjoy this summery first weekend of autumn and help some good causes in the process.
