We’ll take 99 percenters any day of the week

Certainly at this point most people here and elsewhere know about the deadly shooting and related violence that took place recently in Waco, Texas, where a handful of rival biker gangs went toe-to-toe reportedly over territorial issues.

One week ago, nine people were killed and another 18 or so injured after talks between gang leaders went south.

Although the trouble started inside a local watering hole known as Twin Peaks, it quickly spread outside into adjacent parking lots and streets.

More than 200 people were arrested in the melee and some 170 charged with various crimes including murder.

Police remained on guard during the following days after reports that they – law enforcement officers – might next be targets of vengeful bikers.

We haven’t mentioned the names of the gangs involved here because we don’t believe it matters. All of the outlaw bikers are cut from the same cloth, all are organized criminal enterprises and all should be subject to law enforcement.

Taken as a whole, they are known as 1 percenters, meaning their membership, which is engaged in criminal activities, represents only a small fraction of the overall number of people who actually ride motorcycles.

Who, then, are the other 99 percent? Individually, they are your neighbors, friends and family, who love the freedom and fun that motorcycles offer.

As far as groups are concerned, the Superior Chapter of Harley Owners Group do great work, raising and donating thousands of dollars each year to good causes such as Bay Cliff Health Camp and local veterans.

The Harley dealership in Marquette, Bald Eagle Harley Davidson, has also been active in supporting local charities and causes.

We salute them both.

So while the 1 percenters are busy murdering each other out in Texas over who controls what illegal enterprise, the other 99 percenters are working for the betterment of the community here.

We view that as very positive.
