New on-campus archive source will spark memories

An exhibit at the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives should interest men and women of a certain age, and, the university is betting, a great many others with an interest in local history, especially of the cultural and political types.

The college’s tumultuous era of protest in the 1960s and 1970s has been brought into the digital age.

Working with newspaper articles, photographs and audio and video recordings, an online exhibition in which people can explore and learn about everything from demonstrations in support of and against the war in Vietnam to campus race relations, food, housing and dress code controversies and the firing (and later re-hiring) of a beloved but rebellious professor.

A complete story is available in today’s Superior People, page 6A.

The website features a tab where people can explore these years in NMU’s history through a timeline. Tabs that sort the information by topic and by person, as well an additional tab including a plethora of related photos and audio recordings, will be up and functional soon.

Many of the best photos were shot by former NMU photographer Donald Pavloski, himself something of a legend among NMU oldtimers.

This budding addition to the archive is welcome to seriors researchers and casual observers alike. We believe it will become a key resource over time.

While not entirely finished yet, people can preview the online exhibition at archives.nmu.edu/Kelley/student_protests_at_NMU/protestwebsite/final/index.html.
