Marquette in process of developing new master plan

Because of the importance of the document and its role in charting future developments, the people making decisions at Marquette City Hall are wise to update the city’s Master Plan.

This year’s plan builds off the 2004 model. It notes a handful of key projects completed since that time, including construction of the roundabout at South Front Street and U.S. 41, the establishment of an urban forestry program and the development of the city’s linear park and multi-use paths along the abandoned railroad corridor south of West Washington Street.

Going forward, the city is facing several challenges brought on by urban growth, a large population reaching retirement age, changing preferences for ways to live and travel, technological advances, shifting economic ground and climate change.

The new document in all likelihood will address issues associated with each.

Last month, the Marquette City Commission reviewed the plan and discussed the approval process with the planning commission.

The planning commission will accept comments on the plan until May 13. Following that, the planning commission will consider issues brought up and make any needed amendments to the plan.

Interested? The plan can be viewed in person at the city’s community development office in city hall, Peter White Public Library, Northern Michigan University’s Lydia Olsen Library and the Downtown Development Authority office, or it can be viewed online at mqtcty.org/plan-master.php.

We urge you to have a look and get involved.
