U.P. power easily evident in March Madness games

Madness? Nope. March has brought happiness to many Upper Peninsula athletic teams.

For instance, the Marquette Sentinels City Insurance girls hockey team is competing for a national title at the USA Hockey Tier II Girls 19-Under national tournament in Lansing.

Winners of the state championship, the Sentinels take part in a 12-team tournament which began Thursday.

The Sentinels are in Pool C, called the NHL Division on the National side of the bracket, and will play the teams in Pool D, the Liberty Division. The top two of the three teams in their pool, which also includes the Portland, Maine, Pirates and Utah Lady Grizzlies, will advance to Sunday’s quarterfinals. The hopes are the Sentinels can make it to the the semifinals Sunday night and then the championship game Monday.

Last weekend, two girls teams brought Michigan High School Athletic Association titles home to the Upper Peninsula when Calumet won in Class C and St. Ignace in Class D.

North Central represents the U.P. in Saturday’s state boys finals in Class D, looking to bring some more hardware back across the Mighty Mac.

Then on the college level, the Michigan Tech University hockey team is in the hunt for a national title as well. The hockey Huskies are in Fargo, North Dakota, for the NCAA’s West Regional, facing off with St. Cloud State at 4:30 p.m. today.

A victory today puts MTU in Saturday night’s West regional final against the winner of the North Dakota-Quinnipiac game.

The winner in the West advances to the Frozen Four, set for TD Garden in Boston starting April 9.

We offer our congratulations to the Calumet Copper Kings and St. Ignace Saints for their state titles and we wish the best of luck to all those still in the hunt for championships.

Let’s exert some U.P. Power, eh?
