Negaunee district finances continue in good condition
Some good news came out of the Negaunee School District recently that deserves commentary.
The school board there reported what a great many school districts in the region and state wish they could report: The most recent audit finds the system’s finances in good condition.
Prepared by Anderson, Tackman & Co., the review found that the fund balance on June 30 was $2.1 million. Of that amount, $1.6 (million) is unassigned, which is money that can be used for varying purposes, according to Superintendent Dan Skewis.
The district also increased its fund balance by about $86,000 at the end of the 2013-14 school year, Skewis said, when it was originally anticipating losing roughly $127,000.
Further, Skewis noted if the district’s current projections hold true, it will have to transfer more than $400,000 from the fund balance in order to balance the budget, which would leave about $1.7 million in the fund.
It’s been our opinion that the Negaunee district has long been a well-run operation.
Respected Jim Derocher, who retired as superintendent after the 2013-14 school year, had a lot to do with that.
By all accounts, Skewis is picking up where Derocher left off.
