Veterans millage deserves support of county voters

Marquette County voters Tuesday will consider, among many other things, whether to support or oppose a request for a fraction of one mill to establish a county veterans affairs department and fund at least one vets counselor for the office.

The ballot proposal will ask for up to one-tenth of a mill for 10 years. The exact amount levied each year will be determined by the county board, based on the budgetary needs of the office. The county would levy only the amount needed to support the program.

A projected annual budget for the veterans affairs department prepared by a county official is estimated at $130,000, assuming the counselor hired was a county employee.

The budget anticipated an annual salary of $45,000 for the full-time counselor and $16,000 for part-time clerical support.

We’d like to add our voice of support to the many we’ve been hearing.

Mining Journal readers know we seldom support tax increases, believing government should be required to do what the rest of us have been doing: living within our means.

That said, we think this millage would provide a service needed by a great many veterans that currently isn’t being provided in Marquette County.

And, bottom line, we’re not talking about a lot of money here, just a couple of dollars per year for most households.

We urge county voters to step up and support this millage Tuesday. Our veterans sacrificed for us. It’s the least we can do to repay the debt.
