Mining Journal Cookoff at a great student-run venue

Every year we put on the annual Mining Journal Cookoff and offer the Marquette and surrounding communities a chance to showcase its variety in delectable dishes.

This year’s cookoff will be hostedy by Chez Nous, part of the technology and occupational sciences department at Northern Michigan University.

The restauraunt – a bistro-style venue -?is operated by NMU’s second-year hospitality students. Through the program the students are able to take part in some real-world learning by actually being a part of how a resauraunt runs.

We think this is a great way to learn. Sometimes there is no better way to learn than to do.

The hospitality program includes both two-year and four-year degree options and offers a unique hands-on college-level curriculum. This means students will be – with careful observation, of course – learning directly in an experimental environment which encourages creativity and outside-the-box thinking.

Not only are students able to learn how to manage the entire operation, they learn basic cooking, kitchen supervision, a banquet class, bar management and mixology.

We’re happy to showcase our event at this venue.
