Local teen’s work in African orphanage a great example

While most other teenagers are worrying about class schedules, homework and the latest hits on iTunes, there’s one area 14-year-old looking to do a little good in the world.

Amanda Matznick, an Ishpeming teen who took a trip to Africa last November, is hoping to raise money for the Springs of Hope Orphanage in Kenya.

According to its website, the orphanage is home to 44 kids who have no other extended family to care for them. Many more are waiting for a spot.

Matznick volunteered at the orphanage while in Kenya with her family. In a page 6A story penned by Mining Journal Staff Writer Renee Prusi, Matznick describes how much of impact the kids there left on her.

“I learned to be thankful with what we have,” she said. “Because with the little they did have, they were happy.”

We think that is a sentiment that should be shared by all who are reading this. It’s easy to get swept up in the negatives of life, either personal or on a larger scale. There’s plenty to worry about.

But seeing a young child smile who has no family and few if any worldly possessions can provide plenty of perspective.

Matznick, an avid pianist, is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday at the Marquette Federated Women’s Clubhouse, located on West Ridge Street, Marquette.

The event, beginning at 7 p.m., will include a free-will offering for the orphanage.

We hope anyone with time in their schedule stops by the clubhouse Wednesday to listen to Matznick’s musical endeavor, and also drop a dollar or two in the collection plate.

It’s certainly for a worthy cause.
