National Night Out events are worth attending

The spirit of neighborliness shines during National Night Out.

National Night Out events are planned through Aug. 16 at various locations in Marquette County.

NNO parties can be hosted by anyone – organizers said in a news release that last year, 20 different parties throughout Marquette County were attended by more than 3,000 people.

Some local agencies have made it a tradition to host the events, like the Ishpeming Township and Negaunee Township fire departments, for example.

Some churches get in on the fun, while other events are planned by people in neighborhoods.

According to the program’s website, National Night Out is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for local anticrime efforts; and send a message to criminals to let them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

In fact, at many of these gatherings, law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency service workers often visit to answer home security and other safety questions.

In an age in which many do not even know who lives next door, National Night Out is a reminder that friendly folks do exist and that people are willing to be there for their neighbors.

We salute all who are participating this year and encourage more people to sign up to take part in 2015.
