Marquette County will soon say goodbye to what we believe – and we suspect a great many other people would agree – was an outstanding public servant.

Marquette County Clerk Peter Dishnow is set to retire early next month, with his chief deputy clerk, Linda Talsma, already named to fill out the rest of his term.

A low-maintenance kind of guy by trade, Dishnow was one of those relatively-rare public servants that simply did his job, without fanfare.

His tenure, given the decades previous county clerks served, was short; he has been the clerk for Marquette County since November 2011. His term expires at the end of 2016. He is retiring July 4 with his last day in the office June 30.

Prior to his becoming Marquette County’s clerk, Dishnow worked for 23 years with the Michigan Bureau of Elections. Dishnow is an Ishpeming native and current Negaunee Township resident.

Dishnow was exactly how we like our county clerks: competent within the law while being low maintenance and even lower drama. His replacement hopefully learned something of his style while working for him.
