Thomas Sharland Jr.

ISHPEMING, MI- Thomas F. Sharland Jr. age 85, passed away on Monday December 9, 2024 at his home in Ishpeming, while in the loving care of his wife Mary, son Dan, and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Tom was born in Ishpeming on January 5, 1939, son of the late Thomas and Vieno (Heikkila) Sharland. He graduated from the Negaunee St. Paul Catholic High School with the class of 1957. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 until 1962 where he served at the White Sands Missile Range, NM as a Missile Repairman.

Upon discharge, Tom worked for Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad from 1962 to 1970 before moving to a corrections officer position at the Marquette State Prison Branch until his retirement in 1997.

Tom was a life member (45 years) and Executive Board Officer (including commander) for many of those at the American Legion Greenwood Post #114. He was also a member of the Negaunee Eagles Club, AmVets, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380, the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club, and was active in several pro-second Amendment organizations. Tom was a member of Friends of the Public Library Quarterly Column. He loved old cars, music, and had a terrific sense of humor.

Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years- Mary (Guidebeck) Sharland, son- Daniel (Maria) Sharland, 2 brothers- Richard Sharland, Mike (Paula) Sharland, sister-in-law- Bonnie Sharland, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers- Joseph and Patrick Sharland.

Tom’s family will greet relatives and friends on Friday December 13, 2024 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church from 10:00am until 11:00am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am with Fr. Larry Van Damme as celebrant. A luncheon will follow in the K/D Hall.
