MARQUETTE, MI – Gary Louis Roy, age 76, of Marquette, passed away Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, in the loving, comforting care of his family.

Gary was born November 24th, 1945, in Norfolk, Virginia, a son of Norman and Florence (Beaudry) Roy, and was raised in Marquette. He graduated from Graveraet High School in 1963 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving during Vietnam. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Gary returned to Marquette and enrolled at Northern Michigan University, pursuing a degree in psychology and English. On July 6th 1968, Gary was united in marriage to the former Sharon Douville and together the couple made their home in Marquette, where they raised their family. Gary began his working career at Bunny Bread where he was employed for 25 years before a 15 year employment at the Marquette Branch Prison as a corrections officer, from where he retired. Family meant everything to Gary, and he loved his children and grandkids, especially educating and mentoring them in the values and things he enjoyed. He built a camp at Stella Lake and many great family memories were made during the summers spent there. In his leisure, he loved to read and do crossword puzzles and was a talented woodworker who enjoyed being involved in projects. Gary was a member of Jopling Post 44, of the American Legion.

Gary is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sharon “Sherry”; his daughters, Kelly (Russ Hurkmans) Kurian of Marquette and Cathy (Dave) Van Pay of Green Bay, WI; six grandchildren, Megan Bialkowski, Tanya Reffruschinni, Lilly Kurian, Zoe Kurian, Allie Van Pay and Cole Van Pay; four great-grandchildren; his brother, Tom Roy of Marquette; a sister, Carol (Paul) Beaudry of Marquette; sisters-in-law, Jan Roy and Susan Krueger; brothers-in-law, Wayne (Jan) Douville and Bob Douville; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by a daughter, Corrie Reffruschinni; a brother, Norman Roy; a sister-in-law, Karen Roy; and brother-in-law, Dean Krueger.

Honoring the family’s request, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
