Hansen, Maurice

ISHPEMING, MI – Maurice Henry Hansen, age 90, life-long Ishpeming resident passed away Monday June 21, 2021, at Mission Point of Ishpeming.

Maurice was born on January 4, 1931, to Henry and Agnes Hansen, in Ishpeming. He spent his younger years in National Mine, graduating from National Mine High School in 1949. He played basketball and baseball and participated in many school activities.

Maurice served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1951-54 which gave him the opportunity to see foreign countries as well as many different places here in the USA. After his travels, he returned to his home in National Mine.

Maurice was married in 1955, to Mary Ellyn Chinn and had one son, Philip in 1959. Maurice and Mary Ellyn lived at their home in Ishpeming until Mary Ellyn’s passing in 2005.

During that time Maurice was employed by the U.S. Post Office as a mail carrier in Ishpeming, retiring after 45 years of service. These years saw his family travel throughout the country on summer vacations as well as many visits to see relatives in the Midwest. They also were avid antique collectors and spent many hours enjoying their common hobby.

After his retirement, Maurice spent hundreds of hours volunteering for local groups such as the Kiwanis, VFW, Historical Society, Housing Commission, Elks Lodge and was constantly getting around to see the many friends he had made over the years. He also continued to travel and was blessed to find a special friend in Nancy Mankee, for the past 12 years to share his time with.

Throughout his life Maurice attended the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming and the family requests that any memorial contributions be made to them. Pastor Geier and his church family have been a true comfort to Maurice through the hard times, especially in recent months when he was in particularly ill health.

Maurice is survived by his son; Philip, his wife; Darcy Hodges and her children; Jordan and Jocelyn.

Maurice’s family would also like to give special thanks to Curt and Julie Sjoholm of Ishpeming, for all the time they spent with Maurice in the past several years and for all the joy they’ve given him.
