Helen F. Creighton

MARQUETTE, MI – Helen F. Creighton, age 90, of Marquette, and former Manistique resident, entered eternal life Monday, March 29, 2021, at Mill Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care, in the loving, comforting care of her family and Mill Creek staff.

Helen was born December 10, 1930, in Thompson, Michigan. The daughter of Stanley and Ruth (Berger) Shust, Helen was raised in Manistique, graduating from Manistique High School, Class of 1948. On February 11, 1950, Helen was united in marriage to Jack Creighton at Zion Lutheran Church. Helen often stated she knew she was going to marry Jack following their first date. Helen felt extremely blessed to be able to be a stay at home mom and was very proud of her roles of wife, mom, and homemaker.

She treasured time spent with family and with valued friends. She loved spending time at their cottage on Island Lake where she enjoyed the wonderful U.P. summer days and many evenings spent with family around a bonfire with the sounds of laughter and story telling.

In her spare time Helen loved working on crafts of all kinds, working word puzzles, loved feeding and watching the hummingbirds, she rarely missed a Packer or Detroit Tigers game, and she loved a great game of cribbage. She and Jack were also great dancing partners and, in later years, wintered in Tampa, Florida.

Helen was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir, belonged to the Manistique Women’s Club, and Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Karen (Dewayne) Nygard of Marquette; sons, John (Jenifer) Creighton of Manistique, and James (Cathy) Creighton of Manistique; her grandchildren, Brian (Beth) Nygard of Chicago, IL, Jason (Sarah) Nygard of Mukwonago, WI, Dan (Leah) Nygard of Marquette, Curtis (Sara) Creighton of Jenison, MI, Andrew (Jackie) Kemper of Chassell, Karl (Chelsey) Kemper of Wausau, WI, Christine Kemper of St. Louis Park, MN; 9 great-grandsons, a sister-in-law, Joan (Ted) Nemetz of Forest Lake, MN; many nieces and nephews; and some very special friends, Shirley Martin, Betty DeSautel, Irene Hinkson and Jean Gunderson.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jack, she was preceded in death by her beautiful granddaughter, Jessica Creighton; twin brother, Harold Shust and brother, Raymond Shust.

Honoring Helen’s request, a graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique, CBC, or to the charity of your choice.
