Dorothea J. “Dorothy” Weigel

Weigel

MARQUETTE, MI – Dorothy J. “Dodo” Weigel, age 96, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday, February 21, 2021, at home, in the loving, comforting care of her family.

Born September 25, 1924, in Marquette, a daughter of John Howard and Emma (Hendrickson) Hogan, Dorothy was raised in Marquette and attended the local schools through the 10th Grade. Due to her family relocating to Sault Ste. Marie, she was unable to graduate from Graveraet High School, but rather graduated from Sault Ste. Marie High School, Class of 1942. Her first employment following high school graduation, was at the “Voice With A Smile” as an operator for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company in the Soo. After a few years there, she answered a newspaper advertisement placed by the Civil Service offering free training as either a clerk typist or clerk stenographer due to a need to fill openings at military bases. After graduating from Tiffen Ohio Business School, she was assigned to work as a clerk stenographer at Wright Air Base in Dayton, Ohio. While working at the base she met her future husband, Charles Weigel, who was serving in the Army Air Force and stationed there. They were married on April 29, 1946, a union that lasted 54 years, and raised four children together. Dorothy was a stay at home mother until the children reached Junior High School and then entered the working world once again. She was employed at the Marquette Medical Center for several years until her husband retired. When Charles retired, they moved to Zephyrhills, Florida, where Dorothy served as a volunteer at the East Pasco Hospital. During her time in Florida, Dorothy became involved in artwork and learned a lot. When her husband passed away in 1999, she moved back home to Marquette where she also served as a volunteer at Marquette General Hospital. Back home once again, she joined the Lake Superior Art Association (LSAA), American Legion Auxiliary, the Messiah Quilters, and the group of her friends that called themselves TGIW (“Thank God It’s Wednesday”). She also enjoyed learning low relief wood carving with friends and along the way learned to do stained glass. She kept busy and she would say that she was a “Jack of all trades, and Master of none” but it “kept her out of mischief” through the years, Dorothy became well known for her painting and various art through her participation in many art exhibits and earning ribbons in Best of Show and First Place categories. Dorothy’s artistic talents extended to sewing, wood carving, stained glass, watercolor, and oil painting. She was able to be successful in any art medium that she attempted.

Dorothy was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church where she was especially active with the Messiah Quilters. Additional memberships include Lake Superior Art Association, American Legion Post 44 Auxiliary, and Thank God It’s Wednesday.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Jeanne Marie Roidl, Kathleen Ann (Jim) Porschet, Frederick Charles (Olga) Weigel, and Timothy James (Darlene) Weigel; her grandchildren, Lori (Paul) Tourish, Jerry (Desiree) Reynolds, Crystal (Anthony) Vann, Andrew (Amanda) Weigel, Lindsey (Jon) Umlauf, Joshua (Megan) Roidl, Jeremiah Roidl, George Roidl, Ramiro Morales, and Renee Isassi; great-grandchildren, Zachary Tourish, Seth Tourish, EmmaLea Vann, Audree Reynolds, Kyra (Dillon) Ison, Jayden Roidl, and Wyatt Umlauf; her brothers, Richard L.
