Shirley Ann Thoune

MUNISING, MI – Shirley Ann Thoune, age 88 of Munising, died early Saturday morning, September 19, 2020 at Munising Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Stephenson, Michigan to Wilbert and Alice (Nelson) Winter. Shirley grew up in Stephenson and graduated from Stephenson High School in 1950. She married Alvin Joseph Thoune on July 19, 1952 and together they raised their three children. The Thoune family moved to Munising in July of 1965. Shirley was a homemaker until she went to work for the Munising Public School System as a secretary. For seventeen years, Mrs. Thoune touched the lives of faculty, staff, and especially the students with her love, kindness, sense of humor, and laugh. After retirement in 1990, she and Al spent twenty-nine years wintering in Seminole, Florida where Shirley made friends wherever she went. She loved the sunshine and spending time at the pool in Florida and Munising. Shirley was a fantastic cook and gardener. Her pickles and strawberry jam will be fondly remembered for generations.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband of over sixty-eight years – Alvin Thoune of Munising; their children – Dennis (Sandy) Thoune of Allen Park, MI, Bruce Thoune of Munising, and Kathy (Bruce) Kallio of Chatham; five granddaughters whom she adored – Brenda (Brian), Maggie (Ed), Kara, Deanna (Matt), and Makayla (Joe); five great-grandchildren; brother – Lee (Pat) Winter; sister-in-law Mary Winter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Ronnie Winter.

Services will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Due to Michigan’s executive orders, masks will be required, and the funeral home staff will assist with the social distance and compliance during the visitation. Visiting time with family and friends will take place at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. If able, it is requested that if your last name begins with A-M that you attend from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. and if your last name begins with N-Z that you come from 4:00 until 4:45 p.m. A public memorial service and prayer will be held in the funeral home’s chapel at 5:00 p.m.
