Judith Larson

GWINN, MI – Judith Ann ‘Judy’ Larson, 80, entered eternal life with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 9, 2020, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She had been cared for by her husband, Robert, the staff at Mill Creek in Marquette, and U.P. Home Health & Hospice. The family appreciates the great care provided.

Judy was born on January 10, 1940, in Ishpeming to Arvid and Bernice (Nylander) Maunula. She graduated from Gwinn High School in 1958 and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1961. Judy worked at both St. Luke’s and St. Mary’s hospitals in Marquette, and then worked at Marquette General Hospital after the merger of these two hospitals.

Judy was a member of the Gwinn United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She had a love for music that started in the Gwinn High School band and glee club. Her class motto was “sing and I will sing with you, study and you study alone.”

Judy’s spiritual journey included attending many summer Bible camps at Camp Michigamme during her youth. As an adult, she enjoyed attending many Bible studies with her friends. One of her favorite Bible verses was Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Through this verse, she learned to put her faith and trust in God to help her through times of trouble.

Judy was a loving caregiver, who always put the needs of others above her own needs. She cared for her patients, as a nurse, her developmentally disabled son, Allen, her mother who developed Alzheimer’s disease, and many other people during her life. While caring for Allen shortened her nursing career, she always remained a nurse at heart.

Judy loved to quilt and was a member of a local quilting group in Gwinn for several years. She enjoyed the fellowship with the members of this group.

Judy is survived by her husband, Robert; two sons, Jon (Tamara) of Marshall, MI; and Allen of Gwinn; granddaughter, Kasey (Damon) Zimmerman of Coldwater, MI; great- grandson, Daniel Zimmerman; sister-in-law, Penny (Kenneth) Hewitt of Gwinn; and several nephews and a niece.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Arvid and Bernice Maunula; her brother, Garwood Maunula; and sisters-in-law, Norma Noel and Dorothy Haag.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8th at the Gwinn Cemetery, with Rev. Ronald Fike officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Judy’s memory to the Gwinn United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 354, Gwinn, MI 49841 or to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation, 30400 Telegraph Road, Suite 150, Bingham Farms, MI 48025.
