Frank Johnson

MARQUETTE, MI – Frank Ferdinand Johnson, age 84, of Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday, January 11, 2020, at the Norlite Nursing Center in the loving care of the staff that have taken care of him for the past four years.

Born July 6, 1935, in Marquette, the son of Frank and Freda (Larson) Johnson, Frank was a proud North Marquette resident living in his family home his entire life. Frank loved school, attending J.D. Pearce Elementary School, Howard Junior High, and graduated from Graveraet High School in 1953. Frank had a varied work life. While in high school he worked as a student janitor which he was thankful for, and the money it provided. Following graduation, he worked for the Birdseye Veneer Plant, Bunny Bread, Olson Motors, US Postal Service, and Southside Standard Service. Frank was a confirmed bachelor but had a lifelong love affair with old cars. His first true love were Model A Fords. Frank restored, helped restore or directed the restoration of dozens of Model A’s. With his fantastic memory he knew every part number in the catalog. Frank’s pride and joy was his Essex car which he restored with the help of his nephew Bob Johnson. Frank was the originator of the “Pasty Crew”, a group of old car enthusiasts that get together every month. His second love was reading, especially Civil War, World War I, World War II, transportation related and industrial history.

Frank is survived by his nephews, Robert Johnson of Gladstone, Steven (Edie) Johnson of San Antonio, TX and Myron Larson of Rhode Island; nieces, Patti (Jerry) Meyer of Somerset, WI and Cheryl (Erik) Larson – Hrdlicka of Novato, CA; sister-in-law, Helen Larson of Marquette.

In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his sister, Ingrid Johnson and half brother, Andy Larson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to UPAWS (Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter), P.O. Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855.

A memorial service will be held in late spring.
