William Nolan

MARQUETTE, MI – William Glen Nolan, age 83, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday, November 18, 2019, at UP Health System – Marquette, in the loving, comforting care of his family.

Born April 16, 1936, in Lansing, Michigan, a son of Woodis Truman and Mary Elizabeth (Gable) Nolan, Bill was raised in Lansing and graduated from Lansing Eastern High School. He later enrolled at Lansing Community College where he received his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. From there he entered the Michigan State Police Training Academy, and following graduation, served with the Michigan State Police in downstate posts from 1960 to 1995, retiring with the rank of First Lieutenant. In August of 1996, Bill and wife, Jane, relocated to Marquette. Some of his career and civic achievements included being at 1979 graduate of the FBI Academy, active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Old Timers Coffee Clutch, and member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, and Ahmed Shrine. For years, Bill tutored at the Cherry Creek Elementary School and enjoyed mentoring the students on various subjects. He was an avid reader, wrote poetry, enjoyed knitting, was an avid golfer, and an ardent, enthusiastic fan of the MSU Spartans. However, the apple of his eye was his grandchildren and he greatly enjoyed time shared with them, mentoring, storytelling, and instilling values he held dear.

Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Ellen (Hancock) Nolan; his children, Mary (Tom) Charmley of Marquette, Robert (Sally) Nolan of Rehoboth, MA, Ken (Jan) Nolan of Marquette; his grandchildren, Bill (Nicole), Ray (Maddy), and Tricia (Jason) Nolan, Janie, Grace, and Leah Charmley; a brother, John (Pat) Nolan of Shelby Township; sister, Pat Bell of Lansing; brother-in-law, John Scurlock of Seattle, WA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Nolan; and brother-in-law, Charlie Bell.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 23, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. Daniel Ondov will officiate. Members of the Michigan State Police Honor Guard will render honors. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be made in the Park Cemetery.
