GWINN, MI – Emil John Ghiringhelli, 93, of Gwinn died peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at his home.

Emil, the son of the late Casper and Louise Ghiringhelli, was born on January 17, 1926, in Negaunee, MI. and was a lifelong Marquette County resident.

He attended St. Paul’s Catholic High School and was drafted by the United States Army during his senior year. He proudly served his country with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles from April 4,1944 until April 23, 1946.

Following his discharge from the Army Emil returned to the area where he worked various construction jobs until he started working for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company. He retired from the Tilden Mine warehouse department with more than forty years of employment.

Emil was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Gwinn VFW Post 5670, Little Lake American Legion Post 349 and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid hunter. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and his weekly casino trips.

More than anything else in life, he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. They were his entire life. Emil was a kind and gentle man and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by 4 children, Shirley Goris and Louise (Bob) Cherry, both of Saginaw, MI, Terry (Lorrie) Ghiringhelli and Peter (Patty) Ghiringhelli, both of Gwinn; 9 grandchildren, Joey (Allison) Goris, Karen Huff, Paul (Lisa) Cherry, Jennifer (Chris) Frank, Cory (Kristin) Ghiringhelli, Jason (Lynn) Ghiringhelli, Melissa (Don) Hall, Tony (Lisa) Ghiringhelli, and Jenna (John) Maloof; 20 great-grandchildren, Emily, Mia, Brady, Carter, Cameron, Sophie, Josh, Max, Emma, Julia, Dominic, Olivia, Vincent, Sara, Garrett, Lauren, Eli, Michael, Jessica and an expected great-grandson, Michael; sisters, Teresa Toigo of California and Rita (Ray) Perrault of Negaunee; two special nieces, Mary Lou Savitski of Negaunee and Roxanne Filizetti of Marquette as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Emil was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, the former Mary Carmen Filizetti; his sister, Erma Bertocchi and his brother, Louie Ghiringhelli.

The Ghiringhelli family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, November 4th beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial in the church a t 12 Noon with the Rev. Allen Mott officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the Mass with burial and military rites at the Gwinn Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Jason, Cory, Tony, Carter, and Cameron Ghiringhelli.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight, 7508 J Road, Gladstone, MI 49837 or the Gwinn Senior Center, 165 N. Maple St., Gwinn, MI 49841 in Mr. Ghiringhelli’s memory.
