MUNISING, MI – Jack Stanley Carberry, 94, of Munising, died Friday afternoon, October 11, 2019 at UP Health System-Marquette.

He was born May 22, 1925 in Munising, a son of the late Elson and Madeline (Weir) Carberry, Sr. He was a 1943 graduate of Mather High School in Munising and was a lifelong area resident.

Jack was a WWII veteran. He served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre aboard the submarine, USS Bowfin and was stationed in Guam.

Following his service to the country, Jack earned a Bachelor’s degree from NMU, a Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and completed some post Master’s work at Purdue and Michigan State.

He married Bertha W. Piippo on December 4, 1948 and she preceded him in death in 2008.

Jack briefly taught classes in the Eben Public School before teaching in the Munising Public Schools for many years until his retirement as Principal in 1985.

He was a member of Sion Luther Church in Chatham, Munising American Legion Post 131, Friends of the Library, Munising Rotary Club and was a Past Master of the Munising Masonic Lodge. He also served as a local sports booster, Munising City Commissioner and Alger County Board Supervisor.

His interests included hunting, fishing, making maple syrup, traveling, spending winters in Florida and time with his family and grandchildren.

Jack is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Roger) Isberg of Jenison, MI and Pat (Bruce) Dewey of Galesburg, MI; grandchildren, Mike (Ashley) Isberg, Jackie (Jimmy) Knight and Brian (Emily) Dewey; 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Carberry of Harvey; and many wonderful nieces & nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Elson Carberry, Jr. and a sister, Priscilla Carberry Lindquist.

A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2020 and will be announced.
