Gerald Edward Vashaw

MARQUETTE, MI – Gerald Edward Vashaw, known to his friends as “Jer”, passed on Friday, October 18, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at Upper Peninsula Health System – Marquette, after a valiant fight of three years with two different cancers.

He was born on May 3, 1938 to Abraham Vashaw and Esther (Walin) Carlson, in Marquette, Michigan, and was the eldest of four children. Jerry married the love of his life Marie Tousignant on November 8, 1958, and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to start their family. In 1964, they moved back to Marquette to raise their three children. Jerry owned and operated a Standard Gas station on Presque Isle Avenue for two years, until he found his true calling as a Journeyman Electrician with the IBEW 1070. He retired at the age of 62 after 34 years. Jerry and Marie spent their summers at their cottage on Lake Superior but due to health issues sold it this past summer. Jerry’s passion was always his family. He was a man of many talents, which he shared willingly with anyone who needed help, and he never expected anything in return. Jerry and his furry companions always loved to drive around town and coffee clutch with friends and family. He will always be remembered for his smile and good nature. If you were fortunate enough to have met him, you couldn’t help but like him, which held true throughout his life.

He will be extremely missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Marie; his oldest daughter, Laurie (Rod) Eagle, his son, Jeff Vashaw, and his youngest daughter, Sandy (Wayne) Dagenais; his two grandchildren, Keith Williams and Brittany Dagenais; his great-granddaughter, Aryannah; his step-grandchildren, Stacey Eagle, all of Marquette, and Jason (Rachel) Eagle of Minnesota and their three boys, Ben, Sam and Luke. Not to be forgotten are his faithful dog, Maggi, and cat, Molly; his sister, Betsy of Fairbanks, Alaska; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by both of his parents; sister, Judy Smith; brother, Tom Vashaw; and many furry companions. Jerry will always live in his family’s hearts for being the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend to all who knew him. He will always be remembered for his strength, compassion, and work ethic. Fly with the angels until we meet again, we love you! A private service will be held for immediate family. A Celebration of Life will be held next summer at his oldest daughter’s home.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a monetary donation to UPAWS (Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter), P.O. Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855, in Jerry’s name.
