ISHPEMING, MI – Ernie John Harsila, a.k.a. “The Dude”, age 79, long time Ishpeming resident passed away, Friday, October 11, 2019, at UP Health System Marquette where he had been a patient for the past month.

Ernie was born in Negaunee, on March 16, 1940, a son of the late Aili (Salo) and Matthew Harsila. He graduated from Negaunee High School, 1958, and served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1962 during the Cuban-Missile Crisis.

Ernie worked for LS&I Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 2001 as an engineer-conductor. He enjoyed spending time at camp on the Dead River Basin where bocce ball was a favorite game of his.

He was a member of the Dead River Campers Association, and the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Ernie had a great sense of humor and lived by the moto “If you don’t think every day is a good day, trying missing one.” Ernie missed his last day October 11, 2019.

Ernie is survived by 3 children: Randy (Tania) Harsila, Debbie (Wayne) LaMere, and Tonya (Brad Gleason) Harsila, a brother Howard (June) Harsila, grandchildren; Tristen and Bryce Harsila, special friend Robin, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, wife Judy and a daughter Shawna Harsila.

Honoring Ernie’s wishes, cremation will take place and a private service will be held at a later date.
