Dr. Steven Norman Gervae

Dr. Steven Gervae

ONTONAGON, MI – Steve was born in Ishpeming, MI to Norman and Mary (Linna) Gervae. He spent his early childhood on a remote farm in Iron River, MI with his Finnish immigrant grandparents, while his father was away at the war. Steve then grew up and went to school in Negaunee, where he met his life partner, Paulette Ann (Collick) Gervae. They married on August 20, 1966.

Dr. Gervae graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1968 and spent the bulk of his 40+ year career as a surgeon and family doctor in Ontonagon, MI. He was affectionately known around town as “Doc” and was notorious for a rough-cut sense of humor that probably only a Yooper could fully appreciate. In retirement “Doc” enjoyed feeding the birds and other small animals around his home, and passing along jokes via email and Facebook.

Dr. Gervae is survived by his three children: Dan (Kori) Gervae of Iron River, MI, Gina Gervae of Chandler, AZ and Nik Gervae of San Francisco, CA; his sister: Sue (Sonny) Guizzetti of Negaunee, MI; his 5 grandchildren: Jesse Gervae of Ontonagon, MI, Taylor Saaranen of Ontonagon, MI, Lexi Gervae of Iron River, MI, and twins Jalen and Justin Lewis of Chandler, AZ.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Paulette Gervae and his parents, Norman and Mary Gervae.

Per his request, no public services will be held. Dr. Gervae’s life will instead be celebrated with a private family gathering.
