Ruth Thorrington

MUNISING, MI – Ruth Thorrington, age 99, of Munising, died Thursday, August 29, 2019 at her home surrounded by and under the loving care of her family, North Woods Home Hospice, and Commission on Aging.

She was born on February 8, 1920 in Munising to the late Arthur and Coda (Barney) McAllister. Ruth grew up in Munising and has lived in the same home for the past eight-eight years. She graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1939. In 1942, Ruth started working at the Munising Paper Mill in the Finishing Room. She married the love of her life Thomas Thorrington on September 5, 1946, and together they raised their three sons.

While their boys were young, Ruth enjoyed their family Sunday road trips around the U.P. Ruth had a great group of friends who would share their homes and host weekly coffee klatch gatherings. She was a great cook and baker, making many family meals like “String Noodle Soup”, and always baking the favorite treat of whomever was visiting.

No matter what, Ruth always gave credit to who taught her how to make or gave the recipes for the delicious dish. She also enjoyed working on craft projects, embroidering, caring for animals, watching Everybody Loves Raymond, and sharing her witty sense of humor.

Ruth is survived by her three sons – Paul Thorrington of Munising, Dean (Mary) Thorrington of Cedar Springs, MI, and Ron (Karen) Thorrington of Munising; grandson – Justin (Cristal) Thorrington; great-grandson – Bradly, her grand puppies; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Art and Coda and husband Tom.

Visitation will be at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Pastor Jason LaFlamme and Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct Ruth’s memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery and is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ruth’s name may be made to the Alger County Animal Shelter. Her obituary and online guestbook may be viewed and signed at bowermanfuneralhome .net
