Leona Sult

MARQUETTE, MI – Leona Rose Sult, 91, of Marquette, passed away on Sunday morning, July 28, 2019, at Norlite Nursing Center with her family at her side and under the care of Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.

Leona was born on September 20, 1927, in Ishpeming, to the late John and Martha R. (Dompierre) Niemisto.

She was a 1948 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School and a lifelong Marquette resident.

Leona was employed for several years at the former St. Luke’s Hospital, both in their kitchen and as a switchboard operator. She then worked as a housekeeper for the late Rose Tourville and her family. Leona enjoyed picking morel mushrooms and blueberries, playing bingo, fishing, and following Detroit Red Wing Hockey. In her free time she enjoyed listening to Elmer Aho Country radio with a glass of wine. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral.

Leona is survived by two daughters, Christine Sult (Scott) Staggs of Marquette and Bonnie Sult of Ishpeming; grandchildren, Robin and Rigel Pihlainen, Jim and Frank Russell, Joshua, Heidi, Dawson and Caitlyn Sult, Chad Howe Steven Cyrus, Peggy and Kevin Jasper; 10 great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Sult, on March 20, 1995; a son, Wesley Sult; step-daughter, Cheryl Russell and step-son, Clifton Jasper; and her brother, Philip Niemisto.

Leona’s family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, August 5th at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home beginning at 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 12 Noon in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Park Cemetery.
