Joan Frei Petersen
MARQUETTE, MI – Joan Frei Petersen passed away at Norlite Nursing Center on June 21, after a brief illness. Joan was born on April 27, 1926, to the late Myrl and Clayton Frei. She spent most of her 93 years living on the East side of Marquette, a neighborhood that she dearly loved. For the past four years, Joan lived in an apartment at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living, where she enjoyed the exercise classes and made many new friends.
Joan graduated from Graveraet High School and obtained her BA in Education at Northern Michigan University. Joan taught school in Escanaba and Kenosha, Wisconsin. She also operated a private nursery school in Marquette for many years. In 1952, Joan married Julius “Bert” Petersen and they settled in Marquette. They also maintained a cottage at Little Lake, where Joan loved to walk in the woods and pick blueberries and Mayflowers. Joan and Bert were married for 53 years, until Bert’s death in 2005.
Joan was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday School and did other volunteer work. She also volunteered at Marquette General Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, cross-country skiing, walking, and picnics at Presque Isle. Joan was also an avid reader and cribbage player, and she delighted in getting a winning hand.
Joan is survived by her sister, Mrs. Virginia Grundstrom; her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Dorothy Petersen; her daughter and son-in-law, Carole Petersen and Charles Booth; her grandchildren, Daniel Petersen Booth and his wife, Jenna Booth, Eric Petersen, Claire Petersen; and her nieces, nephews, and their children.
Joan was pre-deceased by her husband and her twin sister, Mrs. Joyce Frei Krebs.
Joan’s family is grateful to the members of St Paul’s Episcopal Church, who gave Joan 93 years of faith and fellowship.
The family also thanks the staff at Brookridge Heights and Norlite Nursing Center, as well as the doctors, nurses, and other members of the community who helped Joan so much over the years.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, June 27, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.
A lunch and reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Ridge Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
