Jennie Usimaki

MUNISING, MI – Jennie J. Usimaki, age 100, of Munising, died Wednesday evening, May 29, 2019 at Medilodge of Munising.

She was born on April 2, 1919 in Ramsey, Michigan to the late Antti and Alli (Aho) Moksy. Jennie grew up in Rumley, and was the last surviving member of the graduating class of 1937 from Rock River Township High School in Eben Junction. She married Edward W. Usimaki, Sr. on September 20, 1941 and together they raised their three children.

Jennie enjoyed gardening when they lived on family farm in Rumley, knitting, crocheting, reading inspirational books, and solving cross word puzzles. She enjoyed chaperoning the Silver Echoes Drum and Bugle Corps on road trips, and volunteering and visiting at the senior center. Jennie cherished time with family and would make them traditional mojakka a Finnish fish soup. In her later years, Jennie enjoyed traveling with her family, and took road trips to Florida and Colorado filled with tourist destinations, and cruises through the Caribbean and to Hawaii visiting Pearl Harbor, the ruins, and volcanos. Jeannie lived a full and happy life, and she was strong and independent living on her own even at 100 years of age.

She is survived by her three children – Edward (Kathi) Usimaki, Jr. of Wetmore, Lorayne (Donald) Lehigh of Cedar Springs, MI, and Carol (Bill) Burrows of Ontonagon, MI; nine grandchildren – Susan Herdt, Sheila Anderson, Ann Kuhn, Brenda (John) Brom, David (Karen) Lehigh, Robert (Carmon) Burrows, Carla (Dean) LaPlant, Tina York, and William (Therasa) Burrows; twenty-three great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

Jennie was preceded in death by her parents Antti and Alli and her husband Ed Usimaki, Sr.

Visitation will be on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Munising from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Pastor Mark Werner will conduct Jennie’s memorial service at 12:00 noon.
