Hazel I. Carlyon

She was born on March 14, 1925, in Ishpeming, MI, daughter of the late Francis and Maude Richards. Hazel graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1943 and also received her UP Beauty Academics Diploma from the Marquette School of Cosmetology in 1946.

Hazel enjoyed singing, baking, knitting, collecting antiques and caring for her family.

She was an Order of the Eastern Star member and was raised in the Wesley United Methodist Church of Ishpeming. More recently, Hazel has been a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River where she has received her pastoral care.

In 1944, Hazel married Dr. C James Carlyon and raised their five surviving children, Dennis (Peggy) Carlyon, Larry Carlyon, Bruce (Martha) Carlyon, Dean (Carol Jacobson) Carlyon and Marsha (Don) Nurmela; 10 grandchildren, Jimmer Carlyon, Laura (Kevin) Brouilette, Jason Carlyon, Kristina (Adam Cole) Carlyon, Emily (Cory) Kuchenberg, Sara (Matt) Bertucci, Bradley Nurmela, Allison (Jeff) Rae, Brenda (Jacob) Husing and Blake (Amber) Carlyon; fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marion and four brothers and sisters-in-law, George (Virginia), Tomas (Martha), Robert (Charlotte), Jack (Annabelle).

Visitation will be on Friday, June 28th from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon at the funeral home with Pastor Hans Tolpingrud officiating.

Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ishpeming Carnegie Library, 317 N. Main St., Ishpeming, MI 49849. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
