Charles Cornish

ISHPEMING, MI- Charles W. “Chuck” Cornish, age 87, of 613 N. Main Street Ishpeming, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at UP Health System Marquette where he had been a patient for 1 week.

Charles was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on September 25, 1931, a son of the late Grace (Shaver) and Charles William Cornish. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1949. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army as a Cpl in the Korean War. Charles played basketball during his high school years and during his time in the U.S. Army.

Charles worked for Cleveland Cliffs for 42 years in engineering and safety, mostly at the Republic Mine and Cliffs Shops.

Charles was a lifetime member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for 40 years, a member of the former Ishpeming/Negaunee American Legion Post 136, the Wawonowin Country Club, and a member of the singing and entertaining groups: Choraleers, Allegro and Revelation.

Chuck was a supporter of the Ishpeming Hematites, an avid Green Bay Packers, Detroit Tigers and MSU Basketball fan.

Charles is survived by 4 children: C. Scott Cornish of Sault Ste Marie, MI, Kim Cornish of Negaunee, Jill (Dennis) Dompierre of Negaunee and Curt Cornish of Ishpeming, a sister in law Margaret Bach of Woodstock, IL, along with many nieces, nephews and many many friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary (Arcari) Cornish, 4 sisters: Margaret Skewis, Alice Moyle, Mary Lerlie and Clare Annelin.

Charles family will greet relatives and friends from 10:30 AM – 12:00 Noon on Wednesday June 26, 2019 at the Wesley United Methodist Church 801 Hemlock St. Ishpeming where funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon with Rev. Matthew Osborne officiating.

A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Military Honors will be accorded by the UP-Funeral Honor Team.

Interment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery.
