Bertha Rose (Prater) Demarest

Born January 31, 1940, in Rexton, a daughter of Cecil and Rosella (McCarry) Prater, Bertha was raised in Rexton and later graduated from Engadine High School in 1958. As a youngster, she participated in 4-H sewing. She worked for a time as a waitress in Brevort prior to her marriage to Alvin Demarest. A homemaker, Bertha raised her four children in Naubinway, often taking them down to Lake Michigan to enjoy the shore. A good cook and baker, Bertha enjoyed family gatherings and taking the children down the street to her parent’s home. In later years, she resided in Manistique, Munising, and Ishpeming.

Bertha is survived by her children, Milton Demarest of Marquette, Vicki Perry of Traverse City, Debra Demarest of Marquette, and Michael Demarest of McMillan; several grandchildren; her sister, Wilda (Don) Frederick of Rexton; and a brother, Tom (Jo) Prater of Rexton; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by a brother, William Prater.

Graveside services were held at the Caffey Cemetery in Rexton on Wednesday, June 19, at 3:00 pm.
