NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI — Gordon James Moyle, 84, of North Road, Negaunee Township, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, April 6, 2019 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility with his loving family by his side and under the care of UP Home Health & Hospice.

Gordy was born October 28, 1934 in Laurium, Michigan to Richard and Lucille (Michel) Moyle and graduated from Calumet High School, Class of 1952. Following graduation, he attended the General Motors Institute at Flint for several months, worked for the Department of Natural Resources and served in the Michigan Army National Guard. He married Mary Rose Jolly in 1956 and together they raised four children.

Gordon joined the Michigan State Police in 1957 and served in Houghton Lake, Wakefield, Detroit and eventually retired as a sergeant from the Negaunee Post. He was twice nominated for Michigan State Trooper of the Year. Upon retiring from the MSP, Gordy and his wife owned and operated M & G’s Party Store in Negaunee Township from 1983-93.

Mr. Moyle was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, the Negaunee Township Fire Department, Negaunee Lions Club and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. A selfless volunteer and avid hockey fan, he started hockey programs in Lake Linden and Ramsey, and led the way in organizing community skating programs. Gordy was also instrumental in forming a Junior Sportsman’s Club in the Wakefield area and guided many children in gun safety and shooting.

In their free time, Gordy and Mary Rose enjoyed camping, traveling and wintering in Gulf Shores, Alabama and most recently in Lakeland, Florida. Most importantly, he loved his time spent with his family, especially watching his beloved grandchildren in their many activities.

Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Rose; two sons: Michael (Anne) Moyle of Belmont and Patrick (Becky) Moyle of Negaunee Township; two daughters: Dawn (Michael) Adams of Negaunee Township and Lynette (Kurt) Beinlich of Hudson, WI; nine grandchildren: Tyler, Zachary, Mitchell, Kelli, Kari, Samantha (Adam), Anthony, Jason (Morgan) and Bryan; two great-grandchildren: Blaze and Ty; four sisters: Alice Ziemnick and Mary Lou (Ben) Leiker, both of Lake Linden, Janet (Michael) Dudenas of Eagle River, and Margaret (Vernon) Axford of Lake Linden; sisters-in-law: Ethel Moyle of Laurium, Joan Gerard, Gloria Wyllie and Mary Jane and Nancy Jolly; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson, Nathan Beinlich; three brothers: David (Mary Jane), Thomas (Lorraine) and Donald Moyle; and a sister, Merle Audette.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon at St. Paul Catholic Church on Thursday, April 11th with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. Visitation will take place at Koskey Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm, at which time a parish prayer service and a time for sharing stories and memories will be held. The family will also greet relatives and friends from 10:30 am until the time of Mass at 12 noon at the church on Thursday. A luncheon reception will follow in the St. Paul Gymnasium. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Gordy’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Mr. Moyle’s memory to Bay Cliff Health Camp, N4175 Baycliff Dr., Big Bay, MI 49808.
