Alvin Flatt

NEWBERRY, MI – Alvin A. Flatt, 93, of Newberry, died Tuesday morning March 12, 2019 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital.

Born October 14, 1925 in Engadine, son of the late Adolf and Lydia (Matchinske) Flatt, Alvin was a 1943 graduate of Engadine High School and studied Horticulture at Michigan State University.

Alvin was formerly a farmer in Engadine for 20 years and later built, owned and operated the Vacantionland Motel and later built, owned and operated the A & W Restaurant both of Newberry. Following the death of his first wife Erna in 1962, Alvin sold the A & W business and traded the motel business for the floral business where he continued as owner and operator of Newberry Florist. In addition to the floral business, Alvin built Flatt’s Greenhouse in 1970 continued operating until he sold both in 1989 and 1995 respectively. Even following his retirement in 1995, Alvin continued to assist at the Greenhouse for several years.

In 1943 while residing in Detroit, Alvin attended his first of several Detroit Tigers games and has been a devoted fan ever since. Alvin’s faith in the Lord was exhibited in his generosity as a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he would arrange and provide altar flowers for Sunday services and special occasions. In the summer months he would be seen cultivating his flower gardens at his residence and in the winter months making Christmas wreaths, arrangements and swags for his friends.

In addition to his parents and his first wife Erna, Alvin is preceded in death by his siblings Edmund, Albert, Reinhart, Otto, Leon and Elsie Seller.

Survivors include his loving wife, the former Eldora Miller, whom he married December 31, 1964; children John (Karen) of McMillan, Kristi Flatt of Wyoming and Keith (Diane) Flatt of Wyoming; grandchildren Colleen (Jason) Wilson, Jonathan (Heather) Flatt and Meghan Flatt; great-grandchildren Gavin and Carley Wilson, Madelynn and Nicholas Flatt; siblings Ervin Flatt of Newberry and Gerhart (Ruth) Flatt of Laguna Woods, CA; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends may call at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine on Saturday March 16, 2019 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Funeral services celebrating the life of Alvin will follow at 1:00 pm at the church with Pastor Melinda VanderSys officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
