Shirley DeRoche

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI – Shirley Ann DeRoche, age 86, of Lost Creek Drive, Marquette Township, entered eternal life Friday, January 11, 2019, at UP Health System – Marquette.

Born January 13, 1932, in Marquette, a daughter of Theodore and Agnes (Beauchamp) Boucher, Shirley was raised in Marquette and attended the Fisher, Howard Junior High, and Graveraet High School. Her first employments were with the Walgreen Pharmacy, Woolworths, and Hamburger Heaven. On June 21, 1950, Shirley was united in marriage to Bernard DeRoche in St. Peter Cathedral. They were married just prior to the outbreak of the Korean Conflict and Bernard was serving in the military at the time. The couple made their first home on Pine Street, but Shirley traveled to whatever duty station Bernard was assigned at stateside. Following his honorable discharge, the couple settled in Marquette. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, a stay at home mom raising nine children throughout the years. In her leisure time, she enjoyed bike riding, drawing, painting, making quilts for her children, listening to music and amassing a huge record collection. She and Bernard also enjoyed cross country skiing. Shirley was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis when the fraternity meetings were held in the former Holy Family Orphanage.

Shirley is survived by her children, Bernie (Lynn) DeRoche of Limestone, John DeRoche of Marquette, Marie (Alfred) Madsen of Lino Lakes, MN, Thomas (Vinna) DeRoche of Marquette, William (Jody) DeRoche of Shoreview, MN, Shirley (Kirby) Guthmiller of Wells, MN, Catherine (Gerald) Velasquez of Gwinn, Robert (Theresa) DeRoche of Rochester, MN, and Joseph (Josie) DeRoche of Phoenix, AZ; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Becklund of Marquette; special nieces, Pat Brady and Diane Ward; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; a daughter-in-law, Colleen DeRoche; a brother, Alfred (Mabel) Boucher; and a brother-in-law, Theodore “Ted” Beckland.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, January 14, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Gregg Heikkala officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
