Martha Nelson

ISHPEMING, MI – Martha F. Nelson, age 94, of 512 E. High St. Ishpeming, MI, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019 while in the loving care of her granddaughter and her family and the Lake Superior Hospice.

Martha was born in Finlayson, MN on December 19, 1924, a daughter of the late Fanny O. (Koivisto) and Einar W. Koivisto. She was raised in Esko, MN. She was a graduate of the Esko High School, Class of 1943 as salutatorian.

Martha married the late Roland Nelson on May 22, 1948 in MN.

She worked in the Detroit, MI area for the Chrysler Corp. prior to moving to the Phoenix, AZ area, where they resided for many years. Martha worked as a secretary at ASU and served in the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Arizona and Michigan. Martha had resided in Ishpeming, MI for the past 3 years.

Martha loved coloring, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her daughter – Lynn Marie Cooper of Zion, IL, grandchildren – Kim (Jeremy) Palo, Derek Carlson, Amy Long, Bruce, Brian, Karen, Kristen, Bradley Cooper along with 12 great grandchildren, sisters-in- law – Nancy Koivisto and Julia Nelson. Brother Melvin (Nancy) Koivisto of Esko, and numerous nieces, nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roland Nelson in 2007, daughter Donna Hilborn in 2018, parents, along with her brothers and sisters – Einar, Walter, Bernard, Edwin, Oswald and Roy Koivisto, sisters – Esther Forstie and Marian Martinson.

Visitation – Tuesday January 29th at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary, 7924 N. 59th Ave. Glendale, Az. at 9:30 a.m. followed by the services at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will be at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary, 200 W. Beardsley Rd. Phoenix, AZ. at 12:30 p.m.

For those who are unable to attend Martha’s Arizona services, there will be a local memorial at the Al Quaal Lodge on Poplar St. in Ishpeming, MI on Saturday, February 9th from 1-4 p.m. and will be a potluck.
