Lois J. Toy

Lois was born April 20, 1926 in Ishpeming, the daughter of the late Frederick B. Sr. and H. Louise (Larson) Toy. Lois grew up in National Mine and was a graduate of the National Mine High School, Class of 1944 as the Salutatorian. Lois furthered her education at Northern Michigan University and received a degree in Elementary and Secondary Education. She taught music at the Ishpeming Twp. Schools (North Lake and West Ishpeming). Lois also taught Kindergarten where, at the end of the day, she would kick off her heels and race the children to the bus. Lois spent some time selling records in a department store in Seattle, WA. She taught piano for many years and always thought of the young students as “her kids.”

After retiring from teaching, Lois spent her time caring for her parents, aunts and uncles. She made many visits to Maui, Hawaii to visit her brother Robert “Scotty”, and his family. Lois always kept in touch with school friends, meeting with them on a monthly basis for over 50 years.

Lois loved spending time outside sawing dead wood, shoveling snow and mowing grass. She had a soft spot for all animals, especially Wolves and African Tigers. She loved playing baseball, skiing and making small ski jumps with her best friend, Jean (Trebilcock) Sandstrom. Lois rarely woke up without a smile on her face and she was a joy to spent time with. She was a former active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming and a current member of the Faith Lutheran Church in National Mine.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, brother Frederick Burton “Burt” Toy and his wife Evelyn Toy and brother Robert Scott Toy.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Carole Toy, niece Robyn Toy Webb and her husband, Steve all of Maui; nephew Warren and his wife, Jennifer of Honolulu, HI. She is further survived by close cousins, Richard and Katherine Carrithers of Bellville, WA and Kenneth Larson of Whitefish, MT, “Burt’s” step-children – Sharen (Tim) Schwartz of Canton, Barbara (Adrian) Sheremeta of Northville and John (Janet) Sangala of Livonia, along with special friend and caregiver Ilene Mattson.

A Celebration of Lois’ life will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church, 180 Co Rd PPO, Ishpeming, MI on Friday, January 18, 2019 with visitation from 3:00 – 4:00pm, funeral service will begin at 4:00pm with Rev. Stacy Pethke to officiate. A meal will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Lois’ family and friends would like to thank the entire staff of the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, especially those from the 100 wing and 500 pod. She loved each one of you and you loved her. Lois was always grateful for your loving care. Also, a special thank you to Pastor Stacy Pethke and interim Pastor Doug Norquist for their communion visits and prayers.

In lieu of flowers, Lois requested that memorials be directed to Faith Lutheran Church, 180 Co Rd PPO, Ishpeming, MI 49849.
