MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI – Carol Lynn Tuimala, age 81, of Marquette Township, entered eternal life Saturday, January 12, 2019, at UP Health System – Marquette, in the loving, comforting care of her family.

Born December 13, 1937, in Marquette, a daughter of Francis Edward and Tina Wilhelmena (Paananen) Burns, Carol was raised in Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School in 1956. Following her marriage, Carol settled into her new roles of wife, mother, and homemaker, beginning at her home on Seventh Street. Later, after the children were older, she was employed at a variety of jobs, Marquette General Hospital, College Cleaners, Negaunee Senior Center, and Negaunee Eagles. For a brief time, she resided in Arizona, then Negaunee for fifteen years, before moving back to Marquette.

Carol loved going to the casino, coloring, puzzle books, and watching Lifetime and Hallmark movies. She had a special fondness for birds and always gave her parakeets loving care and attention. She was especially proud of her American Indian heritage and that the historic Burns Landing area in Big Bay is named after her father, Francis Burns, the first baby born in the renamed town of Big Bay in 1906.

Carol is survived by her children, Colleen (Larry) DeLong, William Kuliu and Michael Kuliu all of Marquette, Kenneth and Duane Kuliu both of Negaunee; her grandchildren, Bryan (fiance, Linda Kainulainen) Kuliu, Brandon (fiance, Danni Clishe) Koval, Joshua Kuliu, Eric Kuliu, Jennifer (Aaron) Littlefield, Jake (Rachel) Kuliu, Ashley (Edward) Cretens, Cody (fiance, Lydia Royea) Kuliu, and Luke Kuliu; great-grandchildren, Ava Engle, Alice Cretens, Adelyn Cretens, Aria Cretens, Tatum Kamrowski, and a soon-to- be-expected great- granddaughter; her sister, Kay (Dave) Duncan of St. Paul, MN; and a brother, Francis (Joan) Burns, Jr of Sun City West, AZ; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; a special friend, Sherry Wagner-Helppi of Rochester, MN; and many friends at Oakwood Village apartments in Marquette Township.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Tina Burns; an infant son, Daniel Kuliu and son, Douglas Kuliu; and former husbands, Wilbur Kuliu and Raymond “Corky” Tuimala.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services on Thursday beginning at 4:00 pm until the time of service at 6:00 pm. Rev. Don Ludemann will officiate. Spring interment will be made in the Park Cemetery.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the paramedics of the EMS services and ICU staff at UP Health System – Marquette, for their compassionate and professional care of Carol and for the kindnesses extended to the family.
