Richard G. (Jerry) Erickson

GWINN, MI – Richard G. Erickson 83 passed away May 27 at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Phyllis, brother Kayo, and his first wife Joan Mussatto.

He is survived by wife Judith Wressell Erickson, 2 sons Richard (Julie) and Jeffrey (Julie) Erickson, 4 grandchildren, and three stepchildren.

He graduated from Gwinn High School. His senior year he led Gwinn to it’s only undefeated season in school history and was selected to the first team all state title. In baseball he was a 3 year varsity winner at Western Michigan. His senior year he played in the college world series.

After college Jerry continued his baseball career playing for Gwinn in the UP baseball league. After baseball he played softball for Jack’s Hideaway and they won 2 UP championships.

Upon graduating from Western in 1956 with a BS degree he returned to Gwinn to begin a teaching and coaching career.

His 1960 baseball team won the UP championship. The team was defeated by Bangor in the state championship semi finals that year.

After retirement he and his wife Judy spent their summers at Sporley Lake and their winters in Fort Myers, Fl. In Florida he excelled in golf and horseshoes.

He had a very strong faith and volunteered at his church for several years with his wife Judy. he was also very musically talented. He was known for singing his favorite songs while partying and socializing. He played an important part in Gwinn’s history and will be fondly remembered in Gwinn and Fort Myers.

A private family memorial will be held at the gravesite.
