Mario James Meneguzzo

MARQUETTE, MI ­- Mario James Meneguzzo, age 88, of Clearwater, FL, formerly of Marquette, MI, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Grand Villa Assisted Living in Dunedin, FL.

Mario was born on January 10, 1930 in Gaastra, MI, the son of the late Antonio and Rose (Talerico) Meneguzzo. He attended the Gaastra and Stambaugh schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School, with the Class of 1947. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War from 2 August 1951 – 25 July 1953. After his military service, he resided in the Iron River area until 1966, when he relocated to Marquette.

Mario married the former Maria (Schmitt) Schubert on August 21, 1969 in Marquette and the happy couple made their home in Marquette. Mario and Maria celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in 2017. Mario was employed as a salesman for Selin’s Furniture Store in Iron River and Marquette and was a hardworking man for many years, until retiring in 1995.

Mario was member of St. Michael’s Church of Marquette, St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian, the Elks Lodge of Iron River, and the VFW Post #6 of Marquette. He enjoyed bowling and watching sports, especially football, Green Bay Packer football in particular. He also loved spending quality time with his children and grandchildren, his family meant the world to him. Mario will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who was quick with a smile and conversation for all who crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife, Maria, sons, Al (Debbie Goelz) Schubert of Clearwater, FL, Mark (Pamela Bielat) Schubert of Jackson, GA, and James Meneguzzo of Athens, GA; daughters, Kim (Meneguzzo) Kallenberg of Seal Beach, CA and Kristine Meneguzzo of Marquette, MI; sister, Judy Greenland of Caspian, MI; sister-in-law, Lisa Meneguzzo of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Mario was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Meneguzzo.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from 9:00 to 10:30 am at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11 am at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery, Iron River. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside.
