Elizabeth J. ‘Betty’ Gustafson

ISHPEMING TWP, MI – Elizabeth J. ‘Betty’ Gustafson, 82, of S. Pansy St., Ishpeming Twp., passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 2, 2018 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility with her loving family at her side and under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice.

Betty was born January 15, 1936 in Ishpeming to Charles and Ethel (Harris) Dunstan, graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1954 and was a lifelong Ishpeming area resident. She worked the lunch counter at the Newberry Store, but most loved being a loving and devoted homemaker to her family.

Mrs. Gustafson was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the West Ishpeming Club, the Ishpeming AMVETS Auxiliary, T.O.P.S #625, and was a founding member of the Ishpeming Township Fire Department Auxiliary. In her spare time she enjoyed volunteering at the Ishpeming Senior Center and the Ishpeming Hospital, playing cards, spending time at the family camp, singing, snowmobiling in her younger years and was a member of the Ishpeming Bowling and Horseshoe leagues for over 30 years.

Surviving are her two daughters, Diane (Chuck) Nicholls of Saline, MI and Lori (Ron) Syrjala of Ishpeming Township; her son, Scott Gustafson of St. Louis, MO; 4 grandchildren: Danielle and Jared (Becca) Nicholls and Sarah and Kali Gustafson; great-grandson, Liam Nicholls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Gustafson in 2003; an infant son, Brian; five brothers: Alton ‘Unky’, Robert, Charles, Arthur ‘Clayt’ and William ‘Bill’ Dunstan; and her special canine companion, Rudy.

Memorial services will be held 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 7th at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Stacy Pethke officiating. Interment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until the time of services at 12:00 noon and also at a luncheon in the church fellowship hall immediately following graveside services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Betty’s memory to UPAWS, 84 Snowfield Rd., Negaunee, MI 49866.
