Sylvia Beck

ONTONAGON, MI – In the early morning hours of Friday, May 25,2018, Sylvia Beck peacefully slept into the arms of the Lord in the loving care of her family and UP Home Nursing.

Sylvia was born August 10, 1927 to John and Josephina (Kyrra) Jacobson at the Jacobson family farm in Watton, Michigan. She spent her childhood surrounded by her beloved family and friends and attended the Perch River School. These memories became the stories she told too each generation as we all grew familiar with how life was in those days with hardships and happiness blended to make her stories entertaining and loved. After marrying Gerald Beck, April 29, 1946 in L’Anse, Mi., they spent time in New Mexico while Gerald was in the Army. After completing his duty in the Army, they returned and then began raising their family in Sidnaw.

Moving to Ontonagon, Mi. in 1960, she had the opportunity to work outside the home now that her children were older. She worked as a housekeeper at the Catholic church rectory and later worked for the IGA store. Although she worked outside the home, her first love was being a homemaker and taking care of all her family. She always made sure there was a hot meal on the table. She loved to make pasties and bake cinnamon rolls, gingerbread cookies and trying out new recipes for the family enjoyment. She was always happy to see her family whenever they came to visit always having time to visit, sharing stories, and solving problems. She enjoyed gardening, planting beautiful roses, tulips, geraniums and many other flowers. She even felt that some weeds were beautiful. A very precious time could be spent visiting with her in her backyard enjoying the beautiful time with flowers in bloom. In her younger days she taught Sunday School at the Sidnaw Methodist Church and Ontonagon Methodist Church where she was a faithful member and also enjoyed being around the children which she loved when she taught Sunday School.
