Louis Mitchell

NEGAUNEE, MI – Louis H. Mitchell, age 86, of 410 Cyr St., Negaunee and longtime Ely Twp. resident, passed away on Tuesday evening May 29, 2018 at his home while in the loving care of his family and the U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Louis was born December 22, 1931 in Ishpeming the son of the late Leslie and Anne (Pietro) Mitchell. Louie grew up in Ishpeming and was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1949. He went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Battle Stars. He returned to Ishpeming following his service time and was employed by CCI. Louie worked at the Cliffs Shaft, Humboldt and Tilden Mines as a welder and foreman, retiring in 1982.

Louis was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He enjoyed cutting firewood, cutting Ice in the winter months in his younger years and was an especially talented welder having made many snowplows over the years. He often said “I can weld anything but a broken heart.” He was always willing to help others at any moment. In his younger years Louis enjoyed snowmobiling and riding motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ann Mitchell of Negaunee, special nephews – Les and Steven Kowalski, Dennis Mitchell, and Bob DellAngelo, a great niece and his God-child Jordan Kowalski along with other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Louis was preceded in death by 5 sisters: Mary Grasso, Alice Certo, Marguerite Kowalski, Jane Johnson and Alice DellAngelo and a brother Benjamin Mitchell.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00-11:00 am on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church 1889 Prairie Ave in Ishpeming where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am with the Rev. Fr. Larry Van Damme to officiate.

Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery Columbarium. A luncheon will follow the services in the St. Joseph Church fellowship hall.
