James Daugherty

ISHPEMING, MI – James P. Daugherty, age 74, of 1180 Co Rd CPA, Ishpeming passed away peacefully on Monday April 9, 2018 at UP Health System Bell in Ishpeming.

James was born July 27, 1943 in Butler, PA the son of the late Anthony L. and Ann R. (Christie) Daugherty. He was a graduate of the Butler High School, Class of 1961. In Oct. of 1961 he joined the United States Air Force and after his basic training was assigned to the KI Sawyer Air Force Base where he would be stationed for the duration of his service. While in the Air Force he met the love of his life, Dorothy S. Velin, while standing on a street corner in Marquette. They married on Nov. 4, 1962 in Ishpeming. James had worked briefly for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., and then worked for 38 years for UPPCO as a meter man retiring on his birthday in 2005. During his retirement years, he and Dorothy wintered in Florida, Arizona and for several years in Texas.

James was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed Yahtzee, Domino’s and was an avid cribbage player, along with participating in the local mixed doubles bowling league. Jim took pride in taking care of his yard in the summer months along with moving the snow in the winter.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years Dorothy Daugherty of Ishpeming, daughter Sue (Thad) Cooper of Ishpeming, 3 grandchildren – Brandon Daugherty, Rachel and Ryan Cooper, 7 sisters – Dorothy Snyder of Parker, PA, Marian Strong of Gilbertsville, PA, Anna Sweeny of Butler, PA, Donna (Ron) Weiland of Oak Forest, IL, Doris (Tom) Stephenson of Butler, PA, Peggy Brainard of Warren, OH and Mary Jane Furey of Fenelton, PA, brother Eddie (Betty) Daugherty of Plattsburgh, NY, numerous nieces and nephews along with Debbie Demerest and Mike Schmeltzer.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, son James Daugherty in 2011, sister Betty McClimans, brother Anthony L. Daugherty and his in-laws – Dorothy and Harvey Velin.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10am – 11am on Friday, April 13, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A Memorial Mass will follow at 11:00am Friday with the Rev. Fr. Dan Moll to officiate.

Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery Columbarium.

A luncheon will follow in the St. Joseph Church Hall.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church Memorial Fund or the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
