James D. Hendricks Sr.

CHANHASSEN, MN – Jim Hendricks, age 82, died on Saturday, December 9, in Chanhassen, Minnesota following health related complications.

Jim was born in Columbus, IN on Feb. 9th, 1935. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1953 and went on to complete his BS, MA, and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University Bloomington. In addition, he engaged in post graduate study at the University of Chicago and researched numerous topics in higher education. Jim’s career in education spanned more than 45 years of which he spent 33 years at Northern Michigan University (NMU). During his tenure in the School of Education at NMU, he served as a Professor of Education, Department Chair, and Associate Dean.

In addition to his passion for education, Jim Hendricks and his wife Sandra were dedicated to serving the community. They dedicated time and resources to several organizations to include: the Marquette Rotary, the Peter White Library, the Community Concert Association, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and the Special Olympics, among others.

Jim is survived by three children and their families. Heidi Wartelle of WA; Jim, Eren, Josie, Megan and Kate Hendricks of NC; and Jonathan, Katrina, Morgan and Natalie of MN; as well as numerous relatives in Indiana. Additionally he is proceeded in death by Sandra Hendricks (wife, 1998), Wayne and Mary Hendricks (father, 1986, mother, 1999) and Gerald Hendricks (brother, 1955).

Services will be held on April 7th at 2:00pm at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marquette, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the James and Sandra Hendricks Scholarship Fund at Northern Michigan University Foundation (https://foundation.nmu.
